Meeting Held on Challenges and Priorities of Local Communities in Northern Kosovo

North Mitrovica, February 27, 2025 – A discussion on the political situation, local priorities, and community engagement in decision-making processes was held at the Civic Energy Center, with the aim of fostering a more stable environment in northern Kosovo.

The discussion, titled “Post-Election Period: Emerging Opportunities in North Mitrovica/Northern Kosovo”, gathered representatives of civil society and members of local communities. The event was organized as part of the project “Cohesive futures – Building Resilient Communities through Social Cohesion and Inter-ethnic/Inter-religious Exchange”, implemented by Syri i Vizionit, Edutask Institute, and NGO Aktiv, with the support of the Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund (GCERF).

During the discussion, participants analyzed the new political landscape and the impact of post-election developments on inter-community relations in North Mitrovica and the broader region. Key challenges facing local communities were discussed, including the consequences of halted investments, economic stagnation, and the need to establish dialogue at the local level.

Special attention was given to new security concerns and the importance of strengthening local mechanisms for building trust, developing strategies to prevent radicalization, and maintaining stability. The discussion also addressed the growing concerns about sexual harassment, an issue that requires immediate and effective action.

Economic empowerment was recognized as a crucial factor in improving the quality of life, which can be achieved through supporting local businesses, employment initiatives, and skill development programs.

Environmental protection was also highlighted as a priority, particularly in addressing pollution and waste management issues, with potential projects discussed to contribute to more sustainable solutions in this area.

In the final part of the meeting, participants discussed ways to enhance cooperation and strengthen partnerships between local and international stakeholders. It was concluded that civil society must play a stronger role in decision-making processes, ensuring that the priorities of local communities are recognized and addressed at both the central and local levels.

This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen interethnic dialogue and build a stable and prosperous environment in northern Kosovo.
