Support to access to justice and human rights in the Mitrovica area
This initiative is geared at furthering support to enhance access to justice and human rights in the Mitrovica region, and focuses on the use of alternatives to incarceration. The initiative paid particular attention to community service sentences as an alternative to custodial sentences.
Based on the results of public opinion research led by NGO AKTIV and answers received from research participants, it was concluded that community service sentences are not applied often enough, that the conditions are in place for these kinds of sentences to be imposed because a large number of those surveyed believe that, in many cases, the punishment would be proportionate to the crime.
Furthermore, when examining modern criminal law, it can be seen that there is a growing tendency where alternative sentencing is becoming more and more common and that it is seen as being adequate in achieving justice. This is in line with a more modern approach, that emphasizes re-socialization of the perpetrator rather than retribution.
Your knowledge, experience and expertise in the field of alternative sentencing and their enforcement will make a meaningful contribution to the success of this event. Your presence will also serve to enrich the discussions and debates that will be held.
