MEDIA BRIEFING: RESPONSIBLE JOURNALISM AND SOLIDARITY IN THE DEFENSE OF THE PUBLIC INTEREST

The discussion titled “Responsible Journalism and Solidarity in the Defense of the Public Interest”, organized by NGO Aktiv and AMPEK, was held on 24 November 2025 in Pristina. The event brought together journalists, editors, and civil society representatives with the aim of strengthening professional solidarity and examining mechanisms for protecting journalists from pressure, disinformation, and smear campaigns.

It was emphasized that media freedom and responsible reporting are fundamental for safeguarding democratic processes, and that cooperation between the media community and civil society is essential in countering unprofessional and manipulative content that undermines the public interest.

Participants discussed the challenges of responsible journalism, professional standards, and the role of editorial policies in maintaining public trust in the media. They highlighted the need for stronger institutional and peer support for journalists facing threats and pressure.

Special attention was given to the role of Press Council, ethical codes, and complaint mechanisms, with the conclusion that more consistent application and further strengthening of these mechanisms are required.

The discussion also addressed the importance of solidarity between journalists and civil society as a key instrument for protecting the profession. Examples of successful cooperation were presented, showing how joint efforts contribute to exposing disinformation, protecting individuals from stigmatization campaigns, and strengthening professional standards.

In the segment dedicated to public and institutional support, participants stressed the need for faster responses from media associations and relevant institutions, as well as increased investment in citizens’ media literacy.

The event concluded with the adoption of a short set of recommendations aimed at improving cooperation between the media and civil society organizations, strengthening professional standards, and ensuring a safe environment for journalists.

This meeting is part of a series of initiatives that NGO Aktiv regularly organizes in Pristina and Belgrade to foster dialogue, information exchange, and mutual trust between the media community and the civil sector. In recent years, numerous informal gatherings have taken place, including briefings with journalists from Belgrade-based newsrooms and media outlets reporting in Serbian and Albanian in Kosovo. Through these activities, NGO Aktiv promotes responsible journalism, open dialogue, and a shared commitment to the public interest.
