Marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

On the 25th of November 2014 NGO AKTIV held an event marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.  The overriding goal of the event was to present the results and next steps of the project Strengthening the Institutional Response to Domestic Violence in Northern Kosovo as well as to present the North of Kosovo Safe House Dossier prepared by the AKTIV project implementation team.

The event was attended by members of the project Task Force, compromised of representatives from local public institutions including the Kosovo Police, healthcare institutions, centers for social work and municipalities.  Aside from the Task Force, AKTIV was pleased to welcome the head of the Administrative Office for North Mitrovica, Ms. Adrijana Hodzic and President of the Kosovska Mitrovica Regional Directorate, Mr. Vaso Jelic.  Representatives from the United Nations and Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe were also in attendance.  Both Hodzic and Jelic stressed their support for the project and the need for its realization as well as the need for the full cooperation of local governing bodies.  Mr. Jelic remarked at the beginning of the event that “it’s necessary that all governing structures in north Kosovo engage and work together to build a safe house where all victims will be able to find shelter in one suitable facility through the help of the Finnish Embassy, which has expressed it’s good intentions. In this way we will be able to reduce all forms of domestic violence.”  Following Mr. Jelic, Ms. Hodzic stated “myself and Mayor Rakić have been advocating for serious and concrete support for the realization of the safe house project.  This is not something that will empower victims but will also lead to employment opportunities, not only for North Mitrovica but for the whole region.  I promise you that you will have an active and honest friend in this struggle.” These strong statements of support underline the institutional coalition that AKTIV has built throughout the course of the project and point towards it’s future success in building an effective and sustainable institutional framework for the establishment of a shelter for victims of domestic violence.   The event itself was demonstrative of the fact that there is now a high level of dedication from all relevant actors to see this project through and to build a safe house.  Within the framework of this project, AKTIV will hold capacity building training sessions for local public institutions and will produce the documentation necessary for the creation of protocols and agreements between governing structures that will facilitate the establishment of a safe house in the future.
