International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

On the 25th of November 2013, NGO Aktiv held an event marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on the premises of its Art Center in North Mitrovica.

The event was held as part of Aktiv’s project ‘Don’t Turn Your Head Away – Violence Against Women’ which is currently being implemented in north Kosovo with the generous support of the Embassy of Finland in Pristina.   The event was attended by a variety of representatives from local and international organizations, including the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, UNMIK, the European Centre for Minority Issues, NGO Sinergija (Budi Musko Klub) and a number of other members of civil society in north Kosovo. A lively round table discussion was held on the topic of the role of civil society in tackling violence against women as well as the relationship between non-governmental organizations and public institutions.  The organizations present agreed on a number of issues, most importantly, being the need for closer networking and cooperation between civil-society representatives. This resulted in the parties committing themselves to closer partnerships in the form of meetings and information-sharing.  Aktiv was pleased that the event produced concrete results and looks forward to forging productive relationships with its civil-society partners.  Perhaps more importantly, Aktiv successfully highlighted the importance of the fight against domestic violence and was able to bring more organizations into the fold.   Aktiv would like to extend a special thanks to the Embassy of Finland whose support, dedication and enthusiasm has made this project possible.
