Does the political will to amend the Law on the Use of Languages exist in Kosovo?

A conference dedicated to the draft Proposal for Amendments to the Law on the Use of Languages was held on Friday, July 17. The conference was a continuation of the round table that was held on the same topic the previous day, which you can read about here.

The conference brought together representatives of embassies and international organizations operating in Kosovo, as well as representatives of the civil sector and institutions. During the conference, the publication “Language Impediments to Equal Access to Services” as well as the Proposal for Amendments to the Law on the Use of Languages prepared by the NGO AKTIV were presented. You can find the publication here.

The proposed amendments to the Law prepared by the NGO AKTIV are aimed at improving respect for official bilingualism and language rights in court proceedings in Kosovo. The participants of the conference were informed that the NGO AKTIV intends to conduct a campaign to collect signatures of citizens in the coming months in order to submit the Proposal to the Assembly in accordance with the Law on Legislative Initiatives. Some participants in the conference expressed reservations regarding the existence of political will to take these proposals into consideration and amend the Law so that respect for language rights is improved in the judiciary and other areas.

After consultations with domestic and international stakeholders are completed, NGO AKTIV will revise the Proposal for Amendments to the Law on the Use of Languages and present it to the general public.

The round table was organized within the project “Creating Bilingual Kosovo” implemented by the NGO AKTIV with the support of the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Pristina.
