Accountability Sofa in the Municipality of Novo Brdo/Novobërdë

As part of the project Active Citizens, implemented by the non-government organization Aktiv from North Mitrovica, with the support of the Olof Palme Center, an accountability sofa was held in Novi Brdo/Novobërdë on Thursday, 14th of November 2019. Accountability sofa is an Aktiv brand and concept whose essence is to bring together interested citizens and representatives of local self-government in one place, in an informal atmosphere, in order to hold a constructive debate on various topics of importance to the local population.

During the meeting the present citizens of Novo Brdo/Novobërdë, along with representatives of Novo Brdo/Novobërdë municipality, took the opportunity to present the biggest challenges and problems that citizens of this municipality face.

The citizens pointed out that the burning problem in the municipality of Novo Brdo is the threat of theft to private property and the theft of livestock, agricultural machinery and private vehicles. The citizens pointed out that they do not see any concrete steps being taken to apprehend offenders, or the resolution of these thefts.

In addition, citizens pointed out that the big problem in the municipality of Novo Brdo/Novobërdë is illegal logging, both privately owned and owned by the municipality.

The point was raised that it is evident there is a great deal of efforts of local self-government when it comes to road infrastructure and connecting the remote villages of Novo Brdo municipality; however, this issue continues to be a challenge, which is high on the priority list.

It was emphasized that the tourism in the region has potential; however, nothing systematic is being done to utilize the tourist capacity.

Unfortunately, going in the opposite direction, instead of harnessing existing potentials, we have the constant manipulation, abuse and harming of the material religious heritage of the Serbian Orthodox Church.
